Yoga for Trauma Recovery: Finding Safety and Support on the Mat

By Dr. Felicia Stoler

Trauma affects the mind, body, and spirit, leaving lasting imprints that can be challenging to overcome. At Open Heart Yoga NJ, we are committed to supporting individuals on their healing journeys through our signature Wellness Within program. Yoga offers a pathway to healing by creating a safe, non-judgmental space to reconnect with your body.

Why Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Matters

Unlike traditional yoga practices, trauma-sensitive yoga focuses on making participants feel safe and in control. There is no pressure to perform or perfect a pose—just the gentle encouragement to move at your own pace.

Building Trust and Safety

At Open Heart Yoga NJ, our trauma-informed classes are led by instructors trained to create supportive environments. We have partnered with the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County to provide a licensed clinical social worker for the integration portion of this program. Additionally, most of our instructors have completed trauma-sensitive yoga certification, ensuring our classes are safe, supportive, and compassionate. Whether through gentle guidance or mindful silence, these classes prioritize comfort and consent.

How Yoga Heals Trauma

Research shows that trauma-sensitive yoga helps regulate the nervous system, reducing hyperarousal and creating a sense of safety. By incorporating breathing exercises and gentle movement, individuals can begin to release tension and reclaim their sense of self.
